On Saturday, March 8, 2008, the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, will once again be hosting the MEDAL Architecture program from 8:45 AM until 12:00 NOON in the SARUP Commons area. Associate Dean Gil Snyder and Student Services Coordinator Tammy Taylor will serve as Co-Directors of the event.

The MEDAL Architecture one-day program is open to all high-school age students, and will be conducted by SARUP faculty and area professionals with assistance from SARUP students. This year's task will be to design a tall building for the corner of East Locust Street and North Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. Participants will build models in teams that incorporate a public library in the base of the tall building whose bulk will consist of housing and offices above. The morning session is kicked-off by a 15-minute discussion from Gil Snyder about tall buildings and their potential to function as monuments or markers in the fabric of the city. Following that introduction, students break out into small groups to work on their designs with one-on-one advice from professors, architects, and students.

The MEDAL Architecture program is part of the five introductory sessions for high-school age minority students introducing them to professional life in Medicine, Engineering, Dentistry, Architecture and Law. MEDAL is a community program jointly sponsored by the Milwaukee Area Health Education Center, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Milwaukee Public Schools, Medical College of Wisconsin, Marquette University, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

To sign up for the program or for additional information, contact Tammy Taylor at ttaylor@uwm.edu.
