There is more conglomerate and shale
present here than in other similar sandstones.
The basal conglomerate is interpreted
as a fluvial deposit.
The overlying member is unfossiliferous
sandstone with large-scale cross-bedding and minor conglomerate.
This member is interpreted as deltaic distributary deposits.
The topmost member indicates trangressive
marine deposits formed as the highlands were covered with approaching seas.
According to the previous assumptions,
the Munising formation represents a shoreline setting located next to highlands
on the northern Michigan-Wisconsin border.
