My teaching areas largely concern sedimentary geology, paleontology and
the history of geology. My courses include:
- Historical
Geology - Spring 2004
- Introduction to
Paleontology - Fall 2002
- History of Geological Thought (here is a preview of the next offering)
- Geosciences Seminar:
- Freshman Seminar
- Honors Seminars
- Conducted Field Trip
- Silurian and Carboniferous of the Illinois Basin
- Permian Reef Complex of the Permian Basin of West Texas
- Paleozoic of the Northern Appalachians (with John Isbell)
- Upper Ordovician-Lower Silurian of the Great Basin
- Carboniferous Environments of eastern Kentucky and southern Indiana
(with John Isbell)
- Carbonate
Sedimentology - Fall 2008
- Carbonate Petrology and Diagenesis
My research concerns the sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy of carbonate
rocks. I am currently working on two projects: (1) the Silurian of eastern Wisconsin,
and (2) a comparison
of the Upper Ordovician-Lower Silurian stratigraphy and communities of the Great
Basin (Utah and Nevada) to those in Estonia with Peter Sheehan (Milwaukee
Public Museum). Our work is supported by NSF and our colleagues are Leo Ainsaar
(Tartu University), Linda Hints (Institute of Geology, Tallinn), Peep Mannik (Institute
of Geoogy, Tallinn), Jaak Nolvak (Institute of Geology, Tallinn), and Madis Rubel
(Tartu University). Previous projects were on the Cutoff Formation (Permian) of
west Texas, the reef and foreslope of the Latemar Buildup (Triassic) of the Dolomites,
northern Italy, and the Upper
Ordovician-Lower Silurian of the Great Basin.
