The
term “fictionary” has often been used for lists
of made-up words and definitions. My Fictionary takes the
idea a step further. It’s a fictitious volume of fictitious
words whose definitions are short works of illustrated fiction.
The text and many of the images come from journals and sketchbooks
I’ve kept over the past five years. For some reason,
I had started giving my entries very long, made-up words
as titles and the idea stuck. Some of the titles are real
words or phrases that seem random, but also seemed to make
sense at the time the sketches and writings were made. Last
fall, I took many of my favorite entries and made finished
works out of them. It was never intended to be an actual
book, so the page numbers correspond to absolutely nothing.
Don’t spend too long trying to pronounce my language,
I’m the only one who speaks it fluently!
