Homework & Tests

NOTE - I HAD THE WRONG TIME BEFORE:
The Final exam will be on Wednesday, December 18 from 10 am to noon. The exam will be comprehensive and you will be allowed to use Maple.

You can view the homework for Chapter 9 in HTML or PDF format.

There will be an EXAM on Chapter 10 (sections 1-10, which are the only ones we're covering) on Thursday, December 5. The exam will be at the end of class. You will be allowed to use Maple. We will probably begin chapter 9 before the exam.

Homework now due Tuesday, November 19.
It is not enough just to give the answers in these problems, or even give numerical evidence. You need to explain how you got your answers and how you know they are right.
10.1 #22,24,30,58; 10.2 #8,18,20,44,54a; 10.4 #4,6,22,46; 10.3 #2,6
The homework was graded as follows. Each problem was worth 5 or 10 points; total 120 points. The points for each problem were:
10.1 #22(10),24(5),30(10),58(10); 10.2 #8(5),18(10),20(10),44(10),54a(5); 10.4 #4(5),6(10),22(5),46(10); 10.3 #2(5),6(10)

After Chapter 8, we will do Chapter 10. We will begin this material on Thursday, October 31. You can view the homework for Chapter 10 in HTML or PDF format.

There will be a quiz on the material from Chapter 8 at the start of class on Tuesday, November 5. You will be allowed to use MAPLE (but no calculators) on this quiz.

You can view the homework for Chapter 8 in HTML or PDF format.

Homework due Thursday, October 26:
That was supposed to be Thursday, October 24. However, if you were misled by the date, you can get the worksheet to me by Saturday the 26th. (Which means: in physical - printed or floppy - form to me Friday or by e-mail Saturday.)
Do Prof. McLeod's worksheet on Numerical Integration, replacing the function f he uses with the function f(x)=ln(x) on the interval x=1..2. Hand in the worksheet electronically or a printout of it. Be sure to answer questions 1,2,4,5 for f(x)=ln(x) on the interval [1,2]. (You don't need to do any other functions.)
I suggest you use this worksheet: Numerical integration homework (modification of Prof. McLeod's worksheet)
Change: The material on error estimates is optional.

The first exam will be on Thursday, October 17, covering Chapters 6 and 7 (primarily Chapter 7), except for Section 7.8 (approximate integration). You will not be allowed to use the computer or a calculator on this exam.

On Thursday, October 10, you are to hand in Problems 6,18 from Section 7.1, Problems 14,24 from Section 7.2, and Problems 18,28 from Section 7.3.

You can view the homework for Chapter 7 in HTML or PDF format.

The first quiz, covering Chapter 6, will be on Thursday, September 26, at the start of class, and will probably be about 45 minutes. Specifically, it will cover sections 6.1-6.4, with the most emphasis on 6.2 and 6.3.

On Thursday, September 12, you are to hand in Problems 7,10,22,57ab (in 57, you must explain your answer) from Section 6.1 and Problems 1,2,3,5,7,9 from the Maple Worksheet Review of Math 231 by Prof. McLeod.

You can view the homework for Chapter 6 in HTML or PDF format.
