What is the Wisconsin Archeological Society

The Wisconsin Archeological Society is not for profit organization that is run and staffed by volunteers. The Society has been around since the late 1800's when it was operating out of the Milwaukee Public Museum. It later became incorporated in the State of Wisconsin in 1901.

The Society has undergone many changes over 100 plus years, but through it all the one element that has remained constant is the publication of The Wisconsin Archeologist. The Archeologist has the distinct honor of being the longest continuously published archaeological journal in North America.

The Society provides a number of opportunities for the public to become more informed about the rich prehistoric and historic archaeological resources in Wisconsin. Much of this information is distributed through a variety of media including U.S. postal service, the Society's moderated email list (no spam attacks), the Society's website (www.uwm.edu/Org/WAS/), The Wisconsin Archeologist, and WisArch News (newsletter of the Wisconsin Archeological Society.
