Foreign Languages and Linguistics

German

Since the acquisition of a foreign language and a basic familiarity with foreign cultures are prerequisites for a successful liberal arts education, the German program offers a structured sequence of language and conversation courses as well as a wide variety of literature and cultural history courses. The program trains students in the skills necessary for effective use of the language; provides students with a broad understanding of German, Austrian, and Swiss literature and culture; and seeks to interest the University and local community in events and developments in Germany and other German-speaking countries.

Students who have had no previous training in German should enroll in German 101. Those who have studied German in high school should take the placement exam in German, administered by the Testing Office, before enrolling; the exam is required for those who have had two or more years of high school German. After consultation with the department, a student may enroll in a course one level higher or lower than the one recommended by the placement examination.

Course of Study: German Major

The program offers two tracks to the BA with a major in German: the standard major track and a track specializing in German culture and philology.

All majors are required to take an advanced language proficiency exam, normally during the semester in which they complete 18 credits in the major.

In addition, majors must complete a capstone experience in their senior year. To fulfill this requirement, students, in consultation with their departmental advisors, may elect any one of the following:

1. an internship and work experience with academic components;

2. study abroad or international field work;

3. independent study;

4. senior project;

5. completion of an oral proficiency exam organized by the program.

Credits earned, if any, in completing the capstone requirement do not count toward the minimum credits specified below for each major track.

The standard major track requires a minimum of 24 credits in courses numbered 300 or above, at least 15 of them taken in residence at UWM. Required are German 321 and 322, two intermediate literature courses taken from the sequence German 450-458, and two courses selected from German 511 and advanced literature courses (German 641-651). In addition, students must take 6 credits in advanced language courses. This requirement normally will be met by completion of two of the following: German 326, 426, and 526.

The culture and philology track requires a minimum of 27 credits in courses numbered 300 or above, at least 15 of them taken in residence at UWM. The following courses are required: German 321, 322, 326, 426, 526, 671, and 681; one advanced culture course taken from German 410, 411, and 415; and one course from any German 450-series literature course, 488, or 511.

Students are encouraged strongly to take at least 6 additional credits in related courses outside the program as recommended by their advisor. Majors must register with the program at the beginning of their candidacy.

Course of Study: German Minor

The minor in German requires a minimum of 18 credits in courses numbered 300 or above, at least 9 of them taken in residence at UWM. Two courses from the advanced language sequence, German 326, 426, and 526, are required. In addition, students must complete 12 credits by selecting two of the following course sequences:

a. literary history: German 321 and 322

b. cultural history: German 410 and 411

c. business German: German 360 and 361

Course of Study: Business German Minor

The business German minor consists of a minimum of 18 credits taken in one of two tracks.
