REPORT: Time for some changes
Since the first issue of the Campus Newsletter appeared in February 1966,
UWM's faculty/staff publication has gone through several major
reincarnations and many, many evolutionary alterations. Once again, it's
time for some changes.
A new lookBeginning with the Aug. 24 issue, UWM Report will have a new look. We're redesigning the newsletter to incorporate the university's new logo, typefaces, and grid developed by Thiel Visual Design."For the Record"Beginning with the Aug. 24 issue, "For the Record" (including the "People," "Publications," and "Grants" sections) will be eliminated from UWM Report. It's not that we are no longer proud of the accomplishments of our faculty and staff; it's that so many of you are accomplishing so much that the section has become unwieldy. That first issue of the Campus Newsletter ran to six digest-sized pages. It contained six "people" entries, 19 publications, and three grants. UWM Report now routinely runs up to 36 pages, with four to six pages of "For the Record" material. (By the way, one of the publications that appeared in the first Campus Newsletter was The Urban University, by former Chancellor J. Martin Klotsche.) You are encouraged to add your publication and grant information to UWM's Community of Scholars database (a.k.a. Community of Science). Point your browser to scholars.cos.com or www.cos.com. Contact Greg Walz-Chojnacki (gwc@uwm.edu or ext. 4454) if you need assistance.DeadlinesDeadlines for UWM Report have been standardized. All deadlines now fall on the last working day of the month, with publication during the last week of the following month. There are no July or December issues.Submission of materialsMost articles that appear in UWM Report are written by Office of News Services and Publications staff. Staff writers regularly contact deans, department chairs, and administration staff regarding material for possible inclusion in Report. Report staff also can be reached directly by phone at ext. 4271 or by email at report@csd.uwm.edu.Publication guidelinesIndividual submissions are welcome; however, we ask that you follow these publication guidelines:UPCOMING EVENTS: Announcements of upcoming conferences, lectures, colloquia, special presentations, etc., should be kept as brief as possible, preferably no longer than 300 words (this is the length of one column in Report ). Include a phone number, email address, or Web site for people who would like further information. A photo or graphic adds interest to the announcement. PAST EVENTS: Reviews of events should focus on one or two highlights. An interesting photo with a longish caption can be a very effective way to recap an event. Material should be submitted as soon after the event as possible - certainly within a month. FEATURES: New programs, alumni profiles, grant opportunities, bits of campus history - we welcome submissions on the new, the noteworthy, the unusual. Please keep articles under 900 words. STUDENT NEWS: All of us are proud of our students' accomplishments, and Report welcomes interesting articles involving students. However, we feel that school/college/department student scholarships, student award ceremonies, internal student mentoring programs, etc., more appropriately belong in school/college/department newsletters than in Report. PhotosOur budget does not permit us to send photographers to all of the many events on campus. You may schedule photography directly through Photo Services at ext. 4282. Rates are available from Photo Services. Thanks for your help. We hope you'll enjoy the new UWM Report. Return to Report Contents Page |
