Six Milwaukee Public Schools will be the beneficiaries of the fifth annual
Community Service Day, sponsored by the Milwaukee chapter of the Elfun
Society and GE Medical - and including, for the first time, UWM volunteers.
Join the UWM Volunteer Team as we help teachers and staff at the most challenged central city schools repair and prepare for the coming academic year. Depending upon skill or interest, volunteers will be asked to paint, clean, prepare bulletin boards, rearrange libraries, set up or network computers, or do landscaping. The six schools are Clarke Street, Benjamin Franklin, Hopkins, La Follette, Lee, and Seifert.
Volunteers may participate with the permission of their department. Departments may limit the number of participants for operational needs. Since volunteering will take place without loss of pay, second- and third-shift workers will need to arrange for commensurate time in their departments.
Date: Aug. 17.
Time: Two shifts - either 8 a.m. to noon, or noon to 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided by GE Medical.
Place: Volunteers will meet at the GE parking lot at 43rd and Lincoln. You will be assigned to a bus that will take you to your assigned school and return you to the parking lot at the end of the work schedule.
Deadline: Sign up by July 20.
To volunteer: Email uwmhelps@gw.soe.uwm.edu. Please provide your name, phone number, and email address. Indicate a preference for morning or afternoon, and an area of special interest.
For more information: Contact Diane Ulmer at ext. 4722 or Ed Levin at ext. 6779.
This endeavor has the blessing of Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, in accordance with The Milwaukee Idea, and has been endorsed by the Partnerships for Eduction Action Team.
