The Professional Theatre Training Program's 1999-2000 season includes five plays and a new Lab/Works series of four events. This informal lecture/demonstration series invites audiences to learn about theater in the 21st century from internationally acclaimed artists who have been invited to campus to work with PTTP students. "It is always my goal to select plays that will challenge the PTTP students as well as our audiences," says PTTP Artistic Director James DePaul. "This year's plays are a fascinating mix of the classical and contemporary. We hope that many members of the UWM community will take advantage of all that we have to offer - and at special prices especially for them!"
DePaul adds, "The PTTP's 21st season holds great promise as the program welcomes an outstanding new class of students, gets a last look at current students who will soon begin their professional careers, and is challenged and entertained by some of the finest stories ever brought to any stage."
The season begins with two French classics: "Ubu," a collage based on the plays and writings of Alfred Jarry, adapted and directed by Bill Walters (Oct. 14-30), and Moliere's comedy "Tartuffe," directed by James DePaul (Dec. 2-18).
In collaboration with Renaissance Theaterworks, the PTTP presents the world premiere of local playwright Marie Kohler's "Midnight and Moll Flanders" (Feb. 11-27). Directed by Norma Saldivar, the story is built around the final hours of Daniel Defoe's larger-than-life character.
The season wraps up with two productions in the spring: Samuel Beckett's "Endgame," directed by Lou Salerni (April 6-29), and Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit" (April 13-29). Other than "End-game," which is presented in the Studio Theatre, all plays are performed at the School of the Arts Theatre.
Faculty, staff, and alumni may buy season tickets to all five PTTP plays for only $40, "perhaps the greatest theater bargain in Milwaukee," says DePaul. As a bonus, UWM subscription holders can attend the Lab/Works events for free. Opening night receptions this season will again be sponsored by the Shepherd Express Metro and catered by the Red Rock Cafe.
This year, for the first time, one Wednesday 4 p.m. matinee has been scheduled especially for the convenience of the UWM community. The popular Student Nights also will be repeated this year, with receptions, talkbacks, and reduced ticket prices.
PTTP season brochures contain all performance schedules and ticket ordering details. Pick up a brochure in the School of the Arts Theatre lobby, or call the box office at 229-4308 to order tickets or request that a brochure be sent to you via campus mail.
