Wisconsin Guardsman killed; father faults training, equipment

Steve Castner, a Wisconsin National Guard member, died in an explosion only days after being sent to the Middle East to escort supply convoys into Iraq. Castner had been a student at UWM.

Brillion woman due home today after fleeing Lebanon

A young Brillion woman who was forced to leave war-torn Lebanon, where she was visiting a college friend, is on her way home. She is a UWM student.

Turf war: Environmental advocates, industry groups argue over lawn chemicals' effects on health

A battle is being fought in Milwaukee over the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers on urban green space. Harvey Bootsma, a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's WATER Institute, is quoted in the article.

Nonprofit president receives recognition of excellence award

Family Credit Counseling Service (FCCS) and its president received high honors within the financial literacy community at the Annual Get Checking Conference. FCCS President Michael McAuliffe was presented with the Educator Recognition of Excellence award. Sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Get Checking has helped over 6,000 individuals enter the mainstream of financial services.

As admission to UW-Madison becomes more and more difficult to achieve, enrollment for in-state students is on the decline. Meanwhile, UWM, envisioned as an alternative to UW-Madison, has seen its enrollment increase.

Government contracts may come to Wisconsin

Wisconsin companies could get about $40 million in government contracts under the U.S. Senate's 2007 defense appropriations bill approved Thursday by the Senate Appropriations Committee. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee would get $1 million for researching ways in which the Army can rapidly manufacture components for vehicles in the field.

Youth lack money lessons: Study finds minorities less likely to know how to spend and save wisely

Lifeguards resuscitate man at Cudahy pool

Lifeguards Tim Goesch, Nicholas Gatton, Rannon Bronecki, Jessica Babic and Rebecca Washa worked as a team to help save the life of a 20-year-old Milwaukee man who had hit the water coming off a slide and lost consciousness. Goesch is a UWM student.

UWM dance showcase to focus on identity

UWM students pursuing MFA degrees in dance will put on a showcase concert of the work they've done during their time in Milwaukee. The performance, entitled Dancemakers/Critical Perspectives, concludes Art, Faith and Social Justice, a yearlong festival of events at UWM, Alverno College and Marquette University.

"Exhibition on Hindu Culture and Dharmic Traditions of India," a traveling exhibition on Hinduism, visited the Hindu Temple of Wisconsin in Pewaukee this weekend and then will move on to other sites in Milwaukee, Madison and Janesville. The exhibit is made up of 30 colorful posters that demonstrate different aspects of the religion. UWM sociology professor Lakshmi Kant Bharadwaj spoke on Hinduism at the exhibit.

From humor to women's health, podcasters give the download

"Single Married Widowed Divorced," an audio exploration of all things marital status, is a podcast produced by Carolyn Alfvin, Kit Behling and Mel Miskimen. Alfvin is director of marketing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's College of Nursing.

UWM Guitar Student Organization to play for free
The UWM Guitar Student Organization's jazz unit and Christopher's Project will perform at the Washington Park band shell. The concert is free and will go on weather permitting.

2006 Panther Open raises record amount
CSTV - July 20, 2006
The 2006 Panther Open, a golf tournament and dinner that raises money for UWM's soccer program, took place July 17 at The Bog in Saukville, Wis. The event raised over $20,000, a record high.
