The discrepancy between the gloomy national and hopeful local numbers in manufacturing job reports might be accounted for because of the type of manufacturing in Milwaukee, said John Heywood, UWM professor of economics. Heywood notes that the Milwaukee area tends to enter recessions later than the rest of the nation but also lags in recovering from them because Milwaukee makes a lot of capital goods.

Wisconsin’s newly announced network to help start-up businesses patent technologies, raise money from investors and obtain government grants is "a formal way to bring actors together who have been going down parallel paths," said Sammis White, a professor of urban planning at UWM and associate dean of the university's School of Continuing Education.

Wisconsin ranks first for arrests per 100,000 citizens

One reason Wisconsin ranks so high in the number of arrests is because the state doesn’t do a good job of separating out civil forfeitures from arrests, says Stan Stojkovic, UWM criminal justice professor and dean of the Helen Bader School of Social Work. In other states, he notes, disorderly conduct, vandalism or a liquor law violation are not recorded as an arrest.

Sandra Underwood, a UWM professor of nursing and cancer researcher, gave a Perkins Restaurant hostess a pink crystal pin - symbolizing those fighting breast cancer - one day when she stopped in the restaurant. Now, the hostess, Kathe Langford, herself a cancer survivor, is passing out the pins as part of a grass-roots effort to inform men and women about breast cancer.

Vincent Her, a UWM graduate student studying traditional Hmong culture, says it is unclear whether accused killer Chai Soua Vang’s role as a Shaman is in any way connected to the shootings of six hunters in northern Wisconsin. Her said he did not believe that Shamans could go into a trance so deep that they would lose touch with the physical world, even in a situation of extreme stress.

Bulk Petroleum adds 188 stores in two states

The story mentions that Bulk Petroleum President Darshan Dhaliwal funds the Dhaliwal Distinguished Speaker program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
