According to a report from the Center for Economic Development at UWM, "stealth depression" is evident in some Milwaukee neighborhoods because of the weak economy. Continued losses in manufacturing jobs have led Milwaukee to surpass other major cities in joblessness.

A Driving Force to Help Low-Income Workers

John Pawasarat, director of UWM’s Employment and Training Institute, is quoted in a column about a program to provide job training to potential mechanics and low-cost reliable cars to low-income workers. Pawasarat says the lack of reliable transportation contributes to a so-called job disconnect between unskilled workers in the central city and the jobs-rich suburbs.

Variation of gene linked to binge drinking

A group of six UW schools calling themselves the Wisconsin Cyber Security Coalition has received $1.2 million from the National Science Foundation to pay for faculty development in the field of cyber security, thanks to the efforts of Bill Gregory, dean of the UWM College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Mercury in fish may be less toxic

Research published in the Journal Science claims that methylmercury in fish may not be as dangerous as previously assumed. However, David Petering, UWM professor of chemistry, is quoted in the story as saying the research could be misleading. "Sixty thousand children a year will suffer some effects of methylmercury exposure" from eating fish, said Petering, citing a 2000 study from the National Academy of Sciences. "And the effects are irreversible."

Regional News Briefs: Associate dean moves up at architecture school

Nancy Frank, associate dean of the UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning, has been named acting dean of the school. Frank will take over the school's leadership Sept. 15 while Dean Robert Greenstreet steps into the position of UWM's interim chancellor.


Ethics task force presents proposal; Member says changes are just 'tinkering'

In a story about task force recommendations for changing the city ethics code to head off wrongdoing by elected officials, UWM Associate Professor Mordecai Lee, a task force member, is quoted. Lee says the recommendations suggest few changes and no new penalties.

Five weeks after settling an 85-day strike, the company’s first in 24 years, Waukesha Engine still has an unsettling relationship between union workers and management. A year ago, the company and union received the Melvin Lurie Labor-Management Cooperation Prize from UWM’s human resources and labor relations program.

Professor at Northern Kentucky is a former convict, teaches criminal justice

Northern Kentucky University criminal justice professor Stephen Richards, a UWM alum, brings real-life experience to his teaching. He’s an ex-convict, who earned his master’s degree in sociology from UWM and went on to earn a doctorate and become a professor.

Career path leads woman to area school

Barb Hooper, a former hairstylist who became interested in education after years of volunteering in her children’s schools and went back to school at age 35, is profiled. Hooper, who earned her master’s degree in administrative leadership this year from UWM, just started her first administrative job as assistant principal at Manitowoc’s Washington Junior High School.

Freshman midfielder Dale Weiler pounded home a full-volley strike in the 87th minute to send 18th-ranked UWM past 22nd-ranked New Mexico, 1-0, on Sunday at the McClimon Soccer Complex. UWM (2-0) claimed the championship of the season-opening Rocky Rococo Wisconsin Soccer Classic. UWM also won its season opener against Northern Illinois University earlier in the week.
