According to a report from the Center for Economic Development at UWM,
"stealth depression" is evident in some Milwaukee neighborhoods
because of the weak economy. Continued losses in manufacturing jobs
have led Milwaukee to surpass other major cities in joblessness.

John Pawasarat, director of UWMs Employment and Training Institute,
is quoted in a column about a program to provide job training to potential
mechanics and low-cost reliable cars to low-income workers. Pawasarat
says the lack of reliable transportation contributes to a so-called
job disconnect between unskilled workers in the central city and the
jobs-rich suburbs.

Mercury in fish may be less toxic

Research published in the Journal Science claims that methylmercury
in fish may not be as dangerous as previously assumed. However, David
Petering, UWM professor of chemistry, is quoted in the story as saying
the research could be misleading. "Sixty thousand children a year
will suffer some effects of methylmercury exposure" from eating
fish, said Petering, citing a 2000 study from the National Academy of
Sciences. "And the effects are irreversible."

Nancy Frank, associate dean of the UWM School of Architecture and Urban
Planning, has been named acting dean of the school. Frank will take
over the school's leadership Sept. 15 while Dean Robert Greenstreet
steps into the position of UWM's interim chancellor.

Freshman midfielder Dale Weiler pounded home a full-volley strike in
the 87th minute to send 18th-ranked UWM past 22nd-ranked New Mexico,
1-0, on Sunday at the McClimon Soccer Complex. UWM (2-0) claimed the
championship of the season-opening Rocky Rococo Wisconsin Soccer Classic.
UWM also won its season opener against Northern Illinois University
earlier in the week.
