UWM Union Art Gallery Focuses On ‘Marriage, Home and Family’

MILWAUKEE — The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Union Art Gallery, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., presents “Marriage, Home and Family,” an exhibition of artwork from practicing artists and community members. The work addresses the exhibition themes from a variety of perspectives, including personal memory and beliefs, social commentary and political opinion.

The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, Nov. 17, from 5-8 p.m., with music by The Krause’s Fictive Kin and a dance performance by Your Mother Dances. The exhibition continues through Dec. 15.

Central to the exhibition is an installation in the form of a giant visual quilt formed from 96 squares measuring 2 square feet. The squares were created by local, regional, national and international artists, individuals and organizations.

For the exhibition, a diverse group – adults, children and professional and amateur artists – created paintings, collages, wall-hung sculptures, prints and more. These works reflect the vast range of thoughts and beliefs related to marriage, home and family.

The exhibition also features paintings by David Kasir and installations by artists Katherine Biehl, Chrys Carroll, Naomi Shersty, Evelyn Patricia Terry and Christopher Willey. The artists explore the issues central to the exhibition in more detail by creating “atmospheres” that serve as rooms of a home.

“We are excited to exhibit artwork that is created by established artists next to pieces created by children and nonartists.” says Andrea Skyberg, exhibition curator. That aspect of the exhibition is designed to provoke communication about the subject matter.

The exhibition includes special events on media and the family that are free and open to the public. On Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m., a screening of the video “Class Dismissed: How TV Frames the Working Class” will be followed by a discussion facilitated by Elana Levine, assistant professor of journalism and mass communication at UWM. On Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m., there will be a screening of “The Squid & the Whale.” The discussion following the film will be led by Sue McCarthy, assistant director of the UWM Women’s Resource Center.

“Marriage, Home and Family” events are co-sponsored by the UWM LGBT Resource Center, the Women’s Resource Center and the Union Theatre.

Hours for the Union Art Gallery are noon-5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and noon-7 p.m. Thursday. For more information, phone 414-229-6310 or visit www.unionartgallery.uwm.edu.

The Union Art Gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of diverse, contemporary art. The gallery presents a broad range of visual art by exhibiting work in all media by local, regional and national emerging and established artists. In addition, the gallery is an accessible space for UWM student artists to exhibit and learn.
