GIS and the Art of Motorcycle Marketing: GIS Day at UWM is Nov. 15

MILWAUKEE — A dealer market analyst with Harley-Davidson Motor Company will discuss how his business uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) when UWM hosts GIS Day on Nov. 15.Nick Fisher will give a talk, “GIS Hits the Road,” on how using GIS and demographic data have become critical tools to gain insight into customer purchasing behavior and better understand market dynamics.

GIS is technology that allows multiple kinds of data to be plotted on a map where it can be compared, measured and analyzed.

The keynote begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Golda Meir Library Conference Center, fourth floor, 2311 E. Hartford Ave. Fisher will speak at a complimentary lunch, sponsored by GITA Wisconsin Chapter, in conjunction with Metro Milwaukee GIS Luncheon Group. The public is welcome to this free event, but registration is required by emailing nicholls@uwm.edu.

GIS Day is an outreach event held at universities across the country to showcase real-world applications of this important technology, and introduce it to the general public. Besides the poster and map gallery that is open beginning at 8 a.m. in the AGS Library (third floor East Wing of the Golda Meir Library), the day’s events include a luncheon speaker and GIS workshops.

UWM was a national pioneer institution in GIS education. Courses were first offered by the Department of Urban Planning in the fall of 1988.

UWM’s GIS Day is sponsored by AGS Library, Department of Anthropology, Archaeology Research Laboratory, School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Cartography and Geographic Information Science Center, Center for Urban Initiatives and Research (CUIR), Center for Advanced Spatial Information Research, Department of Geography, the Golda Meir Library and Information and Media Technologies.
