"How-To" Seminar on eBay Selling Set for Dec. 2

MILWAUKEE –Want to find a new home for the mint condition 1977 Star Wars Luke Skywalker figure or that 1968 Chevrolet Corvette repair manual?

“Superselling on eBay” on Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education, 161 W. Wisconsin Ave., gives budding merchants a chance to learn how to share their collections and lighten their load of stuff for a profit.

Mardi Timm, one of 12 officially certified eBay trainers in the U.S., is teaching the seminar. The UWM School of Information Studies organized the class through its new Professional Development Institute. The Institute is focusing on practical computer and technology topics for librarians and other professionals as well as the general public, says Catherine Hansen, director of the Institute. The eBay program, for example, uses the official eBay curriculum to teach students how to do product research, create listings, add photos and keep track of items they’ve listed.

“We’re trying to create a mix of classes that will appeal not only to information studies professionals, but to the rest of the UWM community and the general public,” says Hansen. The focus is on practical applications of technology – like eBay selling, grant writing, building Web sites, computerized graphic design and indexing. “There is a lot of cool stuff out there,” Hansen says.

Other classes offered through the Institute, for example, have included Collaboration 2.0 on using blogs and other online social networking tools, Web site and graphic design, and creating indexes using new technology.  Other, longer online classes, offered in collaboration with a national online education firm, will focus on technology, including classes on various software programs , web site design, and database management as well as basic business writing,  preparing for graduate and law school exams, and grant writing. For a class listing, see the Web site at http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/SLIS/CE/index.html.
