‘How Secondhand Smoke Affects You’ Topic of Sept. 28 Presentation

MILWAUKEE – “Coughs, Cancers, Coronaries and Clean Indoor Air: How Secondhand Smoke Affects YOU” will be discussed by Dr. Richard Sargent from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28, at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Union, Wisconsin Room, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Sargent is a practicing physician and the co-author of the groundbreaking "Helena Heart Study." This study documented the decrease in hospitalizations for heart attacks after a citywide smoking ban went into effect in Helena, Mont.

In addition to commenting on the study, Sargent will speak about the effects of ventilation on secondhand smoke, ways to minimize exposure to secondhand smoke and how to create tobacco-free environments through policy change.

The talk will be followed by a question-and-answer session. “This is a great way for members of the campus community to learn more about secondhand smoke from a very dynamic and knowledgeable speaker,” says Dr. Barbara Moser, director of health education and quality improvement at Norris Health Center.

Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch. Bottled water will be provided. UWM employees are asked to register at http://mydevelopment.uwm.edu/rsvp.cfm?eventid=13105.

For more information, contact Dr. Barbara Moser at Norris Health Center, barbaram@uwm.edu or 414-229-5389.

The presentation is sponsored by Norris Health Center, UWM Union Programming, the Smoke-Free UWM Education Workgroup, the City of Milwaukee Health Department’s Tobacco Control Program, My Dev and UWM Restaurant Operations.
