Danceworks Summer Dance Series Partners With UWM to Co-Present Clare Byrne Dance July 22-23

MILWAUKEE – Danceworks Summer Dance Series partners with the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee to co-present Clare Byrne Dance on July 22-23 at the Danceworks Studio Theatre, 1661 N. Water St.

“Sweet Chariots” is composed of five different pieces created by Byrne. One of the dances, “Ain’t Nothin’ Wrong with That,” was created with UWM dance students in March 2005, while Byrne was a graduate school fellow in dance at UWM. The piece will feature eight UWM students when it is performed at Danceworks.

The remaining four dances that are part of “Sweet Chariots” feature Byrne’s New York-based company.

“Sweet Chariots” is a collection of vibrant dances infused with the energy of jazz and gospel music, according to Byrne. She describes the works as “ranging from meditative to exuberant,” and “highlighting both intimate duets and celebratory communal dancing.” Byrne’s work draws on a range of influences and is popular with audiences who respond to soulful music, joyous athleticism, and exuberant expression.

In addition to the UWM dance students and Byrne’s company, the one-hour program includes guest artist Nicholas Leichter. “Sweet Chariots” features music by jazz composer Eric Reed, Aretha Franklin, James Cleveland, and the Southern California Community Choir.

Byrne was born and raised in central Pennsylvania. She graduated from Connecticut College in 1993 with a BA in Dance, and has been choreographing and performing for 12 years in New York City. Byrne currently teaches at Long Island University. Byrne’s company, Clare Byrne Dance, was inaugurated in 1999 with a performance at the New York International Fringe Festival. The company has performed at many venues in New York City and on the East Coast. The company is in residence at Joyce SoHo in New York City for 2004-05.

Shows are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $18 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors (60+). Reservations are strongly recommended. For tickets and information, call the Danceworks Box Office, 414-277-8480.
