UWM Professor Wins a 2005 Ordre Des Francophones d’Amérique Award

MILWAUKEE — Marc V. Levine, professor of history, was awarded one of seven Ordre Des Francophones d’Amérique awards for 2005 by the Conseil supérieur de la langue française of Québec.

The awards, which are considered a high distinction in the French-speaking world, were given during a ceremony at the Québec National Assembly in March. They recognize the commitment of those who work toward the preservation and development of the language and culture of French America.

Levine is director of UWM’s Center for Canadian-American Policy Studies, which undertakes research and teaching related to Canadian-American issues, and includes development of a Canadian Studies certificate program, course work and study abroad opportunities.

Levine was honored for his influential research on language policy in Québec and his extensive participation in public debates on this issue over the past 15 years. His book, La Reconquête de Montréal, was called “magisterial” by the award committee, and is considered the most exhaustive study of language politics in the city.

The awards have been hosted by the Conseil supérieur de la langue française and Québec’s Minister of Culture and Communications and Minister Responsible for the Charter of the French Language for the last 27 years.
