MILWAUKEE—University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts Music Department faculty member Bernard Zinck will join his student, Maja Kay Skoglund, in a performance of Bach’s Double Concerto in D minor at a concert honoring Washington Park High School’s retiring orchestra director, Doug Johnson. The concert takes place at Washington Park High School, 1901 12th St. in Racine, on Monday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for students and seniors, available at the door.
Skoglund graduated from Washington Park High School in 1998. While a member of the school’s orchestra, Skoglund won the National Orchestra Award and the Eleanor Draves Scholarship. She earned her bachelor of music degree at Wheaton Conservatory in 2002 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in string pedagogy at UWM. Her teachers have included Sharon Hansen (another Washington Park graduate), Paul Vanderwerf, Pamela Simmons, and Karin Potts-Kelleher. Skoglund has studied violin with Zinck since his arrival at UWM in the fall of 2003.
A native of France, Zinck graduated from the Paris Conservatory, and subsequently, from the Juilliard School as a Fulbright Scholar. He completed his doctoral studies at Temple University in Philadelphia on a Russell Conwell Fellowship. He began his international career in 1992 after winning the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin Trust Award in Paris. Prior to joining the faculty at UWM, Zinck was violin professor at the University of New Mexico. Zinck’s career is increasingly international in scope. This season includes recitals in the United States, Mexico, France, Holland, Brazil, Romania, and Italy. Zinck also is regularly invited to conduct master classes in universities and conservatories throughout the United States, Brazil, Mexico and Europe. He performs on a 1690 J. B. Rogeri violin made in Brescia, Italy.
In addition to the concerto for two violins, the concert will feature works for both orchestra and wind ensemble, performed by Washington Park High School Orchestra members.
