MILWAUKEE—The
George Goundie Memorial Scholarship/Silent Auction opens Friday, March 5, with
a reception from 6-9 p.m. in the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Union
Art Gallery, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd. The exhibition continues, along with a silent
auction of the displayed artworks, through March 25, when it closes with a reception
from 5-7 p.m.
Professor Emeritus George Goundie died Dec. 4, 1992, at the age of 79.
A
professor of sculpture in the Department of Visual Art and one of the founding
members of the Peck School of the Arts, Goundie’s primary sculpting medium
was carved stone, but he was well versed in metal casting and welding as well.
Because he also understood the needs and impacts of new technologies in the
discipline of sculpture, he worked with the architects who designed the Art
Building to ensure that the facility was constructed to meet those needs in
years to come
In his 26 years of distinguished service at UWM, he served as chairman of the Art Department, chairman of the Knapp Bequest Committee, a member of the Faculty Senate, and a member of the former UW System Faculty Assembly. Goundie was elected as a faulty member to Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa. He served on a wide variety of arts councils, and exhibited extensively in major regional and national exhibitions.
Events and exhibitions in the Union Art Gallery are free and open to the public. Hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday. For group tours or to arrange weekend visits, phone the gallery office at 414-229-6310.
