New York City Planning Commissioner to Speak at UWM

MILWAUKEE - A noted urban planner and head of the New York City Planning Commission will speak on “The Value of a Great Public Realm” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 12, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM).

Alexander Garvin will give the first annual Charles Causier Memorial Lecture in memory of the former UWM urban planning faculty member and influential Milwaukee community leader. The event will be held in room 105 of Englemann Hall, 2033 E. Hartford Ave. A reception will follow in the Commons area of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, the building just east of Engelmann.

Garvin is leading the design and development aspects of New York’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, and also is actively working on the design planned for the World Trade center site.

He will speak about Milwaukee’s sporadic urban renewal efforts and will address the role of a quality-built environment as one of the keys to a successful city.

The author of several books, including “The American City: What Works, What Doesn’t” (McGraw-Hill, 1996 and 2002), Garvin also is an adjunct professor at Yale University’s School of Art and Architecture. From 1970 to 1980, he held prominent positions in New York City government, including deputy commissioner of housing and director of comprehensive planning.

The event is sponsored by the Department of Urban Planning in conjunction with the architecture firm of HNTB and Milwaukee Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC).
