Susan Marshall and Company Performs at UWM

MILWAUKEE— Beginning with a fall concert, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts welcomes the New York-based Susan Marshall and Company for the first stage of a yearlong project with the Department of Dance.

Susan Marshall, recipient of a MacArthur "genius" award, brings her company to the Peck School of the Arts for a performance of her newest work, "Sleeping Beauty and Other Stories," on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 pm. The concert will take place in the Mainstage Theatre, 2400 N. Kenwood Blvd., on the UWM campus. Tickets are $22/general admission and $12 for students and seniors, and may be obtained by calling the Peck School of the Arts Box Office at (414) 229-4308.

The Oct. 9 performance, the second stop on the company's 20th anniversary international tour, is part of a rehearsal residency at UWM. The residency will include Master Classes and an open rehearsal. Marshall returns in the spring to set a signature work on the UWM Dance students. This work will be performed next summer as part of Summerdances 2004. Marshall's involvement with the UWM Dance Department in 2003-2004 is funded in part by a grant from the National College Choreography Initiative (a joint project of Dance/USA and the National Endowment for the Arts).

The Susan Marshall and Company concert marks the beginning of a collaboration that includes the five-concert season of the Department of Dance. The season continues with Winterdances (Feb. 12-15), the annual winter faculty concert, and New Dancemakers (April 13-18), which showcases work choreographed and performed by Dance Department students. Summer Dance Festival returns in June with Summerdances (June 25-27) and Dancemakers (July 30 and 31).

Ed Burgess, chair of the Department of Dance, is "thrilled" that the students will be able to interact with Marshall and her company over an extended time period. "During this first residency we will see Marshall and her company putting the final touches to their newest work—and we'll see that work before it premieres in New York. Over the course of the year we'll have classes and choreography for our students, and we'll connect in new ways with our community partners. Our program, the Milwaukee dance community, and dance audiences will be inspired by the work of this great artist and her company."

Over the past 20 years, Marshall, artistic director/choreographer of Susan Marshall & Company, has created more than 27 works for her company. The company has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan and they are regular participants in the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival (1988, 1990, 1994, 1996, 1998). Sleeping Beauty and Other Stories travels to the Brooklyn Academy following its Milwaukee premiere.
