UWM Symphony Orchestra Announces 2002-2003 Season

Margery Deutsch celebrates her 19th season as music director and conductor of the UWM Symphony Orchestra in the Peck School of the Arts. This season renowned guest artists join the student ensemble to perform orchestral masterworks of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. All concerts will be held in the Helen Bader Concert Hall of the Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts, 2419 E. Kenwood Boulevard. (Please see attached Fact Sheet for details.)

This is the orchestra's first season in the newly renovated Zelazo Center. The 759-seat concert hall provides excellent acoustics and a home for the orchestra on the UWM campus.

The season opens on October 11 with "From Russia With Love," a concert of works by Glinka, Arutunian and Tchaikovsky that features Kevin Hartman, trumpet. The November 15 concert, "Light and Dark," is a collaboration with UWM Choirs, Sharon Hansen, conductor, and features guest soloists Valerie Errante, soprano and Kurt Ollmann, baritone. On February 9, 2003 Margery Deutsch conducts the 17th Annual High School Honors Orchestra Festival and the UWM Symphony Orchestra, joined by both guest conductor Janet Jensen and the winner of the 13th Annual UWM Young Artist Competition. This concert includes works by George Walker, Julius Williams and George Gershwin and is part of the Milwaukee International Arts Festival 2003 celebrating African-American heritage. Cellist Stefan Kartman and Ann Yeoman, graduate conductor, join the orchestra on March 7, 2003 for a "Song and Dance" concert featuring works by Stella Sung, Bruch, Tchaikovsky and Khachaturian. Wrapping up the season on April 25, 2003 is a program (TBA) with the winner of the UWM Concerto Competition. Subscriptions to one of Milwaukee's most affordable concert series are available for all five concerts for only $35. Student/senior subscriptions are $20. Single tickets are $8 general admission/$5 for students and seniors. For subscriptions and single tickets, contact the Peck School of the Arts Box Office at (414) 229-4308. UWM students, faculty and staff are entitled to free admission with valid UWM identification. Please see attached Fact Sheet.
