MILWAUKEE - G. Richard Meadows has been named Dean of the College of Letters and Science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). Meadows has served as interim dean of the College since February 2001. He succeeds Marshall Goodman, who accepted a position as provost with San Jose State University.
Meadows, who joined UWM in 1971, had served as the College's associate dean for social sciences since 1986. Before becoming associate dean, he was chair of the Department of Economics.
"Richard is a trusted and well-respected leader on our campus," said Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. "The major faculty and staff groups demonstrated this through their unanimous support for his appointment as dean. He has already helped guide Letters and Science through an exciting growth period, and I look forward to all he will do in the future."
The College of Letters and Science is the largest of UWM's 12 schools and colleges. The college instructs its own undergraduate and graduate majors, as well as most UWM students who have not yet selected a major and will later complete a degree in another UWM school or college. In addition to 36 liberal arts majors, the college offers pre-professional study in medicine, dentistry, forestry, law, pharmacy, podiatry, optometry, chiropractic medicine, and veterinary medicine. Letters and Science staff also provides specialized advising and support services to African American, American Indian, Latino, and Southeast Asian students.
Meadows is an expert on property taxes, neighborhood revitalization and community development. His teaching interests include macroeconomics, money and banking, public finance, urban economics and the history of economic theory. He has served as a consultant to state and federal agencies on bank legislation and taxes.
Meadows came to UWM from Washington University in St. Louis where he earned his master's degree and Ph.D. in economics. His earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Texas A&M University.
