MILWAUKEE - To better reflect the work of its faculty and staff, the School of Continuing Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has changed its name from the Division of University Outreach. The Board of Regents of the UW System made the change official at its June 7 meeting.
"The new name aligns us unambiguously with UWM's primary mission, higher education," said Dean and Associate Provost Susan Kelly. "It also makes clear the focus of our diverse range of teaching, research and community service activities." Kelly also pointed out that the name change is consistent with the goals of the Milwaukee Idea. "With the Milwaukee Idea, outreach has become a mission for every school and college; it's no longer the domain of a single unit."
"Our newly named School of Continuing Education has an outstanding history of extending the resources of UWM to local and global communities through courses, educational services and applied research," said UWM Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. "The new name indicates the school will further broaden the reach and impact of these programs and partnerships."
Today the school offers 1,500 programs annually to over 35,000 participants. Most enrollees seek professional courses and certificate programs to meet the changing demands in fields as diverse as human services, engineering, business, information technology and governmental affairs. In addition, the School of Continuing Education offers a large variety of opportunities for personal growth in the arts, humanities and science courses for students of all ages
"Our independent research indicates we are the first choice for quality continuing education, particularly in southeast Wisconsin. A recent survey revealed that an impressive 92 percent of our students rated their educational experience with us as good, very good or excellent," Kelly said. "The research also indicated that 'continuing education' best described the work that we do."
Kelly also thinks that the School's downtown location at 161 W. Wisconsin Ave. serves area students well. "We've got quality programs; a convenient location; and a spacious, comfortable and 'wired' facility. Now we've also got the right name to attract many new students into the UWM community."
