MILWAUKEE --Middle school students can increase their learning power and spend some time on campus with pre-college Mini-Courses at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee this summer. Classes meet from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., and include lunch on campus.
The mini-course program is designed for students with a wide range of interests, abilities, and talents. Whether a student needs additional help in a specific area, is looking for a challenge, or is interested in exploring a new area, mini courses can help.
"By participating in the mini-course program, students not only receive academic support, but they also gain self-esteem, self-confidence, and social skills," says Pre-College Academy Director Carl Meredith. "And because classes are held on the UWM campus, students gain a sense of belonging to the UWM community."
Course #300, "Academic Essentials," is for middle school students with a core GPA below 2.5. This course focuses on the development of reading, writing and math skills. Students needing to reinforce basic skills will work individually and in small groups. Each class meets five days a week for two weeks, July 8-19. The fee for the class is $340 or minority scholarship.
Course #301, "Reading and Writing Workshop," is for middle school students with a core GPA of 2.5 or above. Focusing on enrichment activities for students wanting to challenge their skills in reading and writing, the course explores the relationship between reading and writing. Students also will be exposed to a variety of writing styles. The class meets for one week, July 22-26. The fee for the class is $270 or minority scholarship.
The deadline for registering for classes is May 24. Scholarships are available to minority students through a Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction program. For more information about specific classes, times and scholarships, please call 229-6236.
