MILWAUKEE -Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher will address approximately 10,000 graduates and their guests at the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee Spring Commencement on Sunday, May 12 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Arena, 500 W. Kilbourn Ave.
For the May ceremony, UWM invites the May and August bachelor degree candidates (1,629), and the May master's (672) and PhD candidates (45), to participate. (A total of 2,346 degree candidates.) The university anticipates that 1,600 graduates will attend the ceremony.
Wallace Cheatham will receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree at the ceremony. The first African American scholar to complete the Master of Music program at UWM, he has distinguished himself worldwide as a teacher, researcher, pianist, and composer in the field of African American musicianship. Cheatham has published more than 38 musical works, conducted numerous Milwaukee premiers, served as long-time organist at St. Mark A.M.E. Church, and collaborated with others to publish the history of the National Association of Negro Musicians. Currently the music specialist at Elm Creative Arts School, Cheatham has worked as a teacher for the Milwaukee Public Schools for more than 30 years.
The ceremony also will recognize UWM's faculty and class of 1952 and four distinguished alumni -- Nicholas Burckel (MLIS '83), dean of libraries and associate professor of history at Marquette University; Spencer Coggs (BS '76), State Rep., District 17; Beth Pritchard (BA '69), president and CEO of Bath and Body Works; and David Stroik (BS `72), (MS `74), president of Zimmerman Design Group.
