MILWAUKEE - The community is invited to attend a celebration marking the opening of the new offices of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Roberto Hernández Center in Room 272, Bolton Hall, 3210 N. Maryland Ave. on Friday, May 17.
"This special occasion honors the memory of Roberto Hernández and reflects UWM's commitment to continuing his legacy," says Enrique E. Figueroa, director of the center and assistant to the provost for Latino Affairs.
"So much of what our university and community works toward today is based on the legacy of people such as Roberto Hernandez," says Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. "This event provides an opportunity for UWM to remember and live up to his exemplary career."
The ceremony begins at noon with a welcome, then the presentation of a plaque to Hernández's family. Other recognitions, ribbon cutting, and music and refreshments follow. RSVPs are requested to 229-6156.
Hernández is described as one of the most active Latino leaders in the city of Milwaukee during the 1970s. Hernández, who was a UWM student and staff member of the UW Extension Center for Leadership Development during the late `60s, emerged as a leader in helping to increase Latino representation at UWM. That movement resulted in the founding of what would later be known as the Spanish Speaking Outreach Institute. Hernández died in 1994.
"Roberto Hernández was a major force in shaping the collaborative work of Latinos in Milwaukee," says Figueroa. Hernández is remembered for his goal, "Work towards the educational advancement and a better life for all Latinos and Latinas."
Says Figueroa, "It is our hope that the center dedicated to his memory will continue to make important contributions towards the advancement of Latinos in Milwaukee and the rest of the state." Figueroa points out that the Hernández legacy is fostered by the UWM Latino community and the Latino community of the Greater Milwaukee area.
