UWM to Offer Health Professional Education Certificate

MILWAUKEE -Health professionals often provide education as well as medical care.

To help nurses, respiratory and occupational therapists, and other health professionals better prepare for their teaching role, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is now offering a health professional education certificate.

The newly created certificate program is offered through a collaboration among the Schools of Nursing and Education and the College of Health Sciences.

The program is open to students in a graduate program or health professionals with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree. To earn the certificate, students need to complete 15 credit hours within three years. Courses are offered at nights and on weekends as well as online. The courses focus on such areas as planning education programs for adult students, teaching strategies, and changing health behaviors.

"There is a growing need for health professionals with strong education skills," says Susan Dean-Baar, associate dean of the School of Nursing. "Health professionals often spend time educating patients about ways to better manage their conditions, or teaching the general public about wellness and prevention." In addition, she says, health professionals often are asked to teach other staff members as well as students.

For more information on the program, contact Lisa Schluga at 414-229-5474, schlugal@uwm.edu.
