MILWAUKEE - More than 100 high school students received completion certificates for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Spring 2002 session of the IT 2000 program. Students and their families were honored at a completion ceremony Saturday, April 13.
The IT 2000 program is a collaboration among UWM's School of Information Studies, Division of Student and Multicultural Affairs, the Helen Bader Foundation and the Private Industry Council (PIC). In the program, high school sophomores, juniors and seniors learn basic workplace computer skills on such popular business software as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, slide show presentations, and web design programs. The students are paid a training wage while in the program through the Private Industry Council. Ninety percent of the students are from Milwaukee Public Schools, and 85 percent are African American.
Students who take part in the IT 2000 project also learn other workplace skills such as the importance of being on time, and dressing appropriately. The students take part in mock interviews, join in weekly field trips to companies using a lot of technology, and learn to work in teams.
Emanuel Concepcion, a senior at South Division High School, earned a standing ovation with his reflections on what the program meant to him. Concepcion plans to enter UWM, majoring in Information Studies, this fall.
A number of students were honored at the event. Nigeria Riggins, a 1999 IT 2000 graduate who worked as an office assistant in the spring program, received the Helen Bader Scholarship of more than $5,000. Riggins is currently a freshman at UWM working toward a B.S. in Information Resources.
Other students honored included:
Students who complete the program satisfactorily can receive a letter of recommendation, as well as a certificate of admission to UWM. The admission certificates are valid when the students complete high school and meet UWM entry requirements.
Since the program started in 1999, more than 500 students have graduated. Students are referred to the program through coordinators with the Step-Up program at their high schools.
The summer session of the program starts June 24th. Applications are due to Step-Up program coordinators by the first week of June. Students having interest in IT 2000 who attend schools without a Step Up program should contact the project liaison at (414) 270-1782 or the IT 2000/MITEC Office at (414) 229-2861.
