MILWAUKEE - Researchers will discuss their studies of homicide and other urban crimes as part of the 7th annual Urban Studies Student Forum, "Shaping Urban Lives," at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Hefter Conference Center, 3271 N. Lake Drive, April 20. Conference hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Researchers Carolyn Rebecca Block, Richard Block and Harold Rose will present a panel discussing "Doing Community-Based Research on Homicide and Crime: Chicago and Milwaukee Case Studies," from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m.
Carolyn Rebecca Block is a senior research analyst at the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority. Block advises policymakers, researchers and the public on the use of data for decision making. She is principal author of a major study of domestic violence, the Chicago Women's Health Risk Study.
Richard Block is a professor of sociology and criminal justice at Loyola University in Chicago, who has written extensively on crime and violence in the urban environment. He is currently researching gun markets and violent crime in Chicago.
Harold Rose, professor emeritus in the UWM departments of Geography and Urban Studies, is an internationally known expert on black homicide and the significance of "black suburbanism." He was the principal investigator on the Milwaukee Homicide Project, which looked at juvenile homicide in Milwaukee and recommended risk reduction strategies.
Richard Block also will present "Place, Space and Crime: Rapid Transit Stations, Liquor Places and Other Risky Places in the Urban Environment" at 9:30 a.m.
In addition, as part of the conference, student researchers will present papers on a variety of topics from right-wing terrorism to telenursing.
