President of Council of American Education to Speak at UWM

MILWAUKEE - David Ward, president of the American Council on Education will speak April 27 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's annual William Harvey scholarship dinner. His presentation, which starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Pfister Hotel, inaugurates the School of Education's Distinguished Lecture Series on American education. The event raises funds for a community scholarship fund, named for the former dean of the UWM School of Education.

Ward, a former chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will talk about the state of American education. At the time of his appointment to ACE, Ward said he was eager to join the policy debate in Washington. "The genius of American higher education is its broad access and the great variety of high quality higher education institutions that serve society. We are looking at a future that I believe will be much more collaborative than competitive, especially in the development of instructional technology and distance learning."

Before becoming president of the American Council on Education a year ago, Ward was Charles Kendall Adams university professor at UW-Madison, and director of the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Higher Education.

While at UW-Madison, Ward played a key role in the development of the university's first comprehensive strategic planning document, and worked to strengthen ties with alumni and increase philanthropy. He is a recognized authority on historical urban geography, and has pioneered research on English and American cities during their rapid growth of the 19th and 20th centuries.
