UWM Summer Laboratory Program in Biomedical Sciences Designed for Scholastically Talented High Schoolers

MILWAUKEE - The High School Scholars Laboratory Program in Biomedical Sciences offered by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Health Sciences June 10-21 is designed for scholastically talented Milwaukee area high school students.

Described by coordinators as "a challenging and rewarding two-week science experience," the program offers the opportunity to work alongside UWM faculty, do hands-on laboratory experiments and other interactive activities, gain valuable experience for future study and careers, and enrich scientific knowledge. Students also are able to connect with like-minded high school juniors and seniors in a campus environment.

Areas students explore include assistive technologies, biochemistry, computer sciences and technology, electron microscopy, environmental health, exercise physiology, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, molecular diagnostics, and physics. There also is field work at the Wisconsin Aquatic Technology and Environment Research (WATER) Institute.

One of last year's students described the program as "a great way to dive into more complicated sciences and different areas of study than the typical school studies."

Recommended preparation includes two years of algebra, one year of geometry, and one year of chemistry or physics. Due to the program's intensive hands-on nature, enrollment is limited to 16 students, with early application recommended. The $250 fee represents only a fraction of the program's cost, with the balance underwritten by UWM. A limited number of scholarships is available. Application deadline is April 5. Refunds will not be given for cancellations after May 30.

Questions can be directed to Susan Roskopf, Department of Health Sciences, at 229-3121, or email masroskopf@uwm.edu. Application and recommendation forms are available at the address/phone number above, and on the College of Health Sciences Web site at www.chs.uwm.edu.
