UWM Dance Program to Present 'New Dancemakers'

Tenth Annual Concert of New Student Work, March 5-10

The UWM Peck School of the Arts Dance Program presents New Dancemakers 2002, March 5-10, in the Mitchell Hall Chamber Theatre, 3203 North Downer Avenue, on the UWM campus. The concert features work by UWM Dance majors, and provides an excellent opportunity to catch a glimpse of the future of modern dance in Milwaukee. Tickets are $10 general admission and $7 for students and seniors. They may be purchased at the Peck School of the Arts Box Office, or by phone by calling (414) 229-4308. Seating is limited; reservations are strongly recommended. New Dancemakers will feature work by Kelly Zwiers, Kelly Anderson, Katie Tesch, John Bielecki, and Corrie Marinkovich. While the choreographers are all students, several of them have already garnered professional experience by performing with local dance companies and producing their own work independently. Many of them participated, as performers and choreographers, in the recent "Bad Meat" concert presented by FootHold Dance/Performance.

"The great thing about the series," according to Ed Burgess, artistic director for New Dancemakers, "has always been the individuality of the dances and the varied methods of expression chosen by the choreographers. Some are intensely physical, some comment on social issues, some explore ideas abstractly, and some explore the blend of text/story and dance. No one is shy about being dramatic, sensitive or humorous within these individual approaches."

Burgess, who joined the UWM Dance Program faculty in 1989, sees New Dancemakers as a rite of passage: "Choreographing for this series is a giant step toward artistic maturity for our young dancers. When I see what each of them accomplishes, I stop thinking of them as students and begin to see them as responsible, committed artists."
