Friday Workshop Will Explore Speech-to-Print System Used at UWM

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is one of two postsecondary institutions in the nation that has a full-time C-Print(tm) Captionist. The system benefits a broad range of students.

Shannon R. Aylesworth, who is filling that post at UWM's Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) program, says "C-Print(tm) captioning is an exciting technology that offers real-time classroom access to students who are deaf or hard of hearing; students with learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, dysgraphia (fine motor difficulty), or visual impairments; or students for whom English is a second language."

According to Aylesworth, C-Print(tm) captioning is being used at UWM with a BrailleNote BT to provide real-time classroom access to a Deaf/Blind student. "This is believed to be the first successful real-time classroom access using captioning with a Deaf/Blind student," she says.

The DHH program is holding a C-Print(tm) Informational Meeting on Friday, Nov. 30, 1:30-3:30 p.m. in Business Administration S220. "The meeting is open to the public and is meant to inform anyone interested in learning about this computer-aided speech-to-print transcription system," says Aylesworth. The DHH program also plans to host a workshop at UWM this spring to train individuals in C-Print(tm) captioning.
