UWM Announces Child Welfare Training Collaboration

MILWAUKEE--A new collaboration between the Wisconsin Division of Children and Family Services and the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare will be announced at a news conference on Friday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Hefter Conference Center, 3271 N. Lake Dr.

The school is receiving a contract from the division to provide high quality, competency based in-service training to child welfare staff employed by the Milwaukee Child Welfare Partnership.

The partnership is coordinated by the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare, with Children's Service Society, Innovative Family Partnerships, La Causa, Lutheran Social Services, and the Wisconsin Community Services Network as member partners.

Those attending the news conference include Nancy L. Zimpher, UWM chancellor; Susan Dreyfus, administrator for the Division of Children and Family Services; David Hergert, deputy director, Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare; and James A. Blackburn, dean, Helen Bader School of Social Welfare.

"Our aim at the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare is to provide training that will support workers as they strive to be family-centered, child-focused and culturally responsive," says Gwat-Yong Lie, associate professor of social work and overall project manager.

The program in the Milwaukee area currently targets new child welfare workers; the plan over the long term is to offer competency-based training to existing staff as well. "As a member of the statewide Wisconsin Child Welfare Training Council, we will work with the other council members around the state to share and optimize the use of training resources and training offerings," says Rachelle Alioto, director of training for the project. Examples of training offerings include "The Effects of Abuse and Neglect on Child Development," "Separation and Placement: Impact on the Child," "Culture and Diversity in Child Welfare Practice," and "Case Planning and Family Centered Casework."

Says Lie, "At its core, the purpose of the training program is to help ensure kids are safe and risks are reduced."
