Inspiration Fuels the Fire to Graduate

Erick Hall
According to national statistics, Erick Hall shouldn't be where he is today. But, as he says with a chuckle, his mother just wouldn't leave him alone. Erick is a single parent, a small business owner, and a student in CHS Clinical Lab Sciences program. His life is full. Very full.
Between attending classes, and caring for his children, Erick founded Atmosphere Entertainment — a one-stop entertainment company that provides sound and lighting for parties, wedding, and corporate events.
Erick's kids clearly share his drive. 4-year-old Nakayla just started school, but was ready to attend long before she was eligible. Always eager to read, she's enrolled in an after-school program to learn Spanish. “Being bilingual will be a great asset throughout her life,” Erick says. Rocky, Erick's 12-year-old son, volunteers in a peer program where he reads to elders. He is already talking about college. “I'm really so proud of both my kids. They are a constant source of inspiration to me.”
But the number one inspiration in Erick's life is his mother, June Jordan-Hall. “She's the main reason I'm in college–why I'm persevering.” Erick's mother holds an MSW, and is a retired social worker with high standards and ideals. She marched with Dr. Martin Luther King in Alabama and protested for civil rights. “She does push, but she's been through a lot, so I listen to her.” Erick continues, “I am so glad she's back in the Midwest. I remember my relationship with my grandmother, and I wanted my kids to have that relationship as well.”
Another source of inspiration comes from CHS' Office of Diversity. “HCOP is a tremendously wonderful program. Greg [Thomas] & Marion [McDowell] provide a great support system. They push me, too. Now I can't thank them enough.”
Erick acknowledges that his 18-hour days are as tiring on body, as they are rewarding to soul. He is counting his blessings.
