UWM’s Hearing Evaluation Center Enters New Phase of Serving Milwaukee With Move to West Allis
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Hearing Evaluation Center has a long history of providing comprehensive audiological services on campus. During the last 10 years, the services and clinical population have grown significantly through a collaboration with The Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CDHH). In March of 2006, the Hearing Evaluation Center moved off campus to a new West Allis location alongside CDHH. The collaborative clinic, Community Audiology Services, is located at 10243 W. National Ave.This unique clinic benefits the Milwaukee metropolitan community as much as it does students in UWM’s College of Health Sciences’ Communication Sciences & Disorders program, the UWM community and CDHH.
Community Audiology Services provides audiological services to its patients as well as outreach to the community, including hearing screenings at various health fairs, schools, day care centers and senior centers throughout metro Milwaukee. Through this work, speech-language pathology students receive essential clinical training with a diverse population.
The clinic provides consultative support to the UWM Student Accessibility Center, and assistive listening devices and clinical services to UWM students who are deaf and hard of hearing. It also provides services to the UWM campus community at large, including hearing assessments for employees who are exposed to excessive noise levels, pre-employment screenings and evaluations for faculty, staff and students.
College of Health Sciences’ Clinical Associate Professor Tricia Bowen Chirillo, licensed and certified audiologist, is coordinator of the clinic. Stacy Ryan recently joined the clinic as associate clinical audiologist. While most services are housed in the new facility, Community Audiology Services continues to provide limited services on campus.
In its tradition of successful collaboration, Community Audiology Services will continue its long history of comprehensive, high-quality service to Milwaukee and to UWM. For information, phone 414-541-4327.
