UWM Research Well-Represented in BTA Research Grant Awards
Six of the 11 research grants recently awarded by the Biomedical Technology Alliance are led by researchers at UWM. Together, the proposals by UWM researchers total about a quarter of the $1 million seed money awarded. In addition, UWM professor of chemistry James Cook is a participant in one of the winning proposals from Marquette University. This project alone was awarded $250,000.
The BTA, a partnership among UWM, the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), Marquette University, the Milwaukee School of Engineering and UW-Parkside, was created last summer to find avenues of funding for collaborative research among the institutions in southeastern Wisconsin.
The purpose of the BTA’s Collaborative Grant Program (CGP) is to increase innovative and interdisciplinary research with commercial potential. A half-million dollars in seed money was provided by the state and matched by the participating institutions in this first round of the CGP.
Funded proposals focus on health care fields such as bioinformatics, diabetes, heart disease and schizophrenia. UWM researchers’ winning proposals include:
- James Moyer,
assistant professor of psychology
“Developing a Therapeutic for Alzheimer’s.” Participators: Marquette University - Ann
Snyder, professor
of human movement sciences
“Effect of Near-Infrared Light Treatment for Muscle Function and Diabetes.” Participators: Marquette University and MCW - Niloofar Tabatabai,
associate scientist in chemistry
“Molecular Approach to Reduce Hyperglycemia in Diabetes.” Participators: MCW - Min
Wu, assistant
