Milwaukee Idea Snapshots

Throughout metropolitan Milwaukee and across the UWM campus, Milwaukee Idea initiatives and programs are flourishing. A summary of recent accomplishments is available on the Web at http://www.uwm.edu/News/report/03.06/08_MkeIdea.html.
Here are some highlights:

Milwaukee Partnership Academy
attracts major grants

At Hartford School in Milwaukee, reluctant readers are turning into enthusiastic bookworms. At South Division High School, a science teacher is making sure her budding chemists and physicists integrate reading and writing as well as lab work into their studies. These are just two examples of how a comprehensive math and literacy initiative launched by the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA) is making a difference in the city’s public schools. Its collaborative efforts have been key in attracting several major new education grants.http://www.uwm.edu/News/Features/02.07/mpa.html

New graduate certificate focuses on nonprofit management

According to a recent report, “Economic Benefits of Wisconsin’s Nonprofit Sector,” the nonprofit sector is growing faster than the overall state economy, annually generating $34 billion in economic activity and employing more than 240,000 people. A new Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management offers students the knowledge and skills they will need to pursue or advance careers in nonprofit organizations.

When TechStar was created in 2000, its goal was to make Southeastern Wisconsin more competitive in the new economy. Early accomplishments of this unique partnership include the launch of six technology-based companies with high growth potential - spinoffs of local universities that now employ more than 50 people and have attracted more than $10 million in equity and grant funding.
