New Work from the
Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum
Two Rivers, Wisconsin

hamilton.jpg (38578 bytes) This exhibition, curated by Richard Zauft, Associate Dean of the UWM Peck School of the Arts, highlights the historical and contemporary dimensions of the Hamilton Manufacturing Company in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, through work currently being conducted at the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum.

Wood type production at Hamilton Manufacturing began in 1880 and continued through the early 1980s. In the early twentieth century, Hamilton was the largest manufacturer of wood type in the country. This exhibition highlights the importance of Hamilton wood type to the American printing industry, and demonstrates the use of the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum for scholarship and contemporary fine printing.

Materials on display include photographs, type display catalogs, and examples of wood types and copy forms. To demonstrate the museum collection's active use for art research and fine letterpress printing, the exhibition also features fifteen original typographic prints by Richard Zauft and his students, and twelve original typographic prints and examples of graphic design by Dennis Ichiyama, professor of art in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Purdue University.

Through the efforts of the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum, and the Two Rivers Historical Society which maintains it, a unique opportunity is afforded to fine printers, artists, and scholars to utilize and research one of the world's largest collections of wood type.

"New Work from the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum," is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm.
