Syriac texts made up part of the earliest transmissions of the New Testament, and in 616 C.E. Thomas, Bishop of Harkel, edited and added marginal notes to conform them to Greek manuscripts. Interest in the Syriac, or Peshitta, version of the Bible was revived in Europe in 1555, when some scholars claimed that Jesus had spoken Syriac; the text was hotly debated and subsequently forgotten.
