About the Database

Women's Studies International (WSI) is an interdisciplinary index providing access to ten contributing databases. Some materials are available for earlier years, and there is select full text available online. WSI includes records from the following:

  • Searching the Database

    Important Note! Use the symbols provided on each screen to navigate. Avoid using the browser's Back and Forward buttons. Click Help for detailed instructions.

    Quick Search

    Type keywords in the top box to search for all of the keywords (similar to searching using "and") or type in the next box to search for any of terms (similar to searching using "or"). Use quotes, i.e., "glass ceiling," to search as a phrase.

    Keywords in either the "any" or the "all" text boxes have choices of search strategy; select the preferred option.

    Add search criteria or search in additional fields by typing in author, publication year or a range of dates, or publication title.

    Put the cursur in the text box for author, year, or publication, then click to view an alphabetical listing of index terms assigned to records in the database. Mark the term(s) of interest from the listing, click "Add to Search Field." Click "Search" to add the terms to the search strategy, then click "Search" again. To replace existing search terms with newly selected terms, click "Overwrite Search Field" and then return to the search screen.

    Advanced and Expert Searches

    This database can also be searched in ADVANCED or EXPERT format. Click on , and make the choices from the options given..

    Advanced Search allows searching in all available search fields utilizing the Boolean AND, OR, NOT between fields (e.g., author, title, periodical name, publication year, publication type) in any order. The default value is AND between fields. Phrase searching is assumed in Advanced Search so quotes are not needed.

    Expert Search supports complex search strategies over a series of individual search sets. Help for both formats in provided online. Basic or Advanced Searches are recommended for most users.

    Displaying Search Results

    Records are displayed in citation format (author, title of article, name of journal, volume, page, date), e.g.:

    To view the full format for a records, click "view Database Record." The full record display includes the citation, a listing of assigned index terms, and an abstract where available. Scroll through the previous or next set of records by using the appropriate arrows.

    To view both the list of results and an individual record at the same time, click and select split screen. The results will appear at the top, with the selected record(s) at the bottom. The search and results will split the screen, allowing easier modification of search strategy and viewing the results without having to switch back and forth.

    Emailing, Printing, Saving Records

    Individual records or a full page of results can be printed by clicking on on the right of the page. To print available full text, use the commands on the browser bar; for PDF files, use the commands on the Adobe bar.

    To select multiple records, mark each desired record for printing, downloading, or emailing.

    Select the output format of choice. Only citations can be printed, emailed, or downloaded as multiple entries. To print, email, or save an individual full text article, have the full text on the screen and follow the browser or Adobe instructions.

    Select the output option of choice .

    Email marked records. After selecting the preferred option, click "Email," enter an email address, and click "Email Records." Email subject line and notes are optional. Select to clear marked records or lave them marked after emailing.

    To print or save records choose the format, then select "Print" or "Save" and follow the instructions in the appropriate pop-up box. To save, select File, Save as…, change the disk drive to a:\, then type a filename and .txt in the FILE NAME box. Click OK. To print, follow the instructions in the pop-up box.
