The Library Council of Metropolitan Milwaukee, Inc., is pleased to present this Online
Guide to Genealogical Collections in the Milwaukee Metropolitan Area. We offer it to
the genealogical community with great confidence that it will be useful for a
number of years to come.
The Library Council of Metropolitan Milwaukee, Inc. (LCOMM), is a non-profit organization of all types of libraries and archives in southeastern Wisconsin. LCOMM was established in 1972 and it exists to provide opportunities for cooperative activities, continuing education, and the sharing of resources to benefit employees of member institutions, users, and the community at large. The LCOMM Archives Committee was formed to provide a means of communication among archivists, promoting the sharing of knowledge, experience, resources, and referral of clients. LCOMM is fortunate to have an Archives Committee that is dedicated to our organization and to community service, and was willing to take on the job of compiling this Guide.
The public is fortunate to have in the southeastern Wisconsin a number of repositories devoted to the acquisition and preservation of archival and manuscript collections which are useful for a growing community of genealogists and scholars. In the writing of this Guide, LCOMM has imposed upon the services of many organizations, for which we are grateful. LCOMM owes its thanks to Alverno College, Marquette University, Milwaukee Archdiocesan Archives, Milwaukee County Historical Society, Milwaukee Public Library, Order of Saint Camillus, School Sisters of Notre Dame, School Sisters of Saint Francis, Sheboygan County Historical Research Center, Sisters of the Divine Savior, Washington County Historical Society Museum, and the Waukesha County Historical Society. LCOMM is especially grateful to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Golda Meir Library, where the Guide was compiled and edited; Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company for its printing; and the Volunteer Services for the Visually Handicapped for its binding.
Questions or comments about this publication are most welcome. Please address them to LCOMM, 814 West Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53233.
