ABSTRACT:  Miscellaneous records of the department, the bulk of which is in correspondence files, largely concerning curriculum development, exhibits, funding, and staffing. The correspondence files contain records on the origins and early development of the Department, including the controversy as to which School or College would administer it. There is some information on the Department's support for a bachelor's degree program in religious studies, a 1965 exhibit of Greek and Russian icons, the William and Eileen Liebman Lectures in the History of Art, and brochures on a variety of other exhibits.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).


ARRANGEMENT: The files are organized alphabetically by personal name, name of office, or by subject, then chronologically. Files can contain a variety of materials, including correspondence, staff memos, and reports.


ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: UWM's Department of Art and Art Education recommended, on 18 November 1960, that a Department of Art History be established in the School of Education. On 2 December 1960, a UWM Sub-Group on Art History recommended that the Department be placed in the College of Letters & Science. The Department was created, and placed within the College, in June 1961.

ACQUISITION:  An unknown individual transferred the collection to the Archives prior to 1989.


PROCESSING:  Don Haider began processing the collection at the Archives in October 1993; Mark A. Vargas completed processing in December 1993. The collection originally consisted of three series.
