SCOPE AND CONTENT: The collection consists of  twenty-two volumes arranged alphabetically by type and, thereafter, chronologically by year. The election records cover the period 1868-1907 with some overlap between volumes. They include voter lists and vote tallies for local, (and in some instances) state, and national offices. The highway record book (1868-1901) contains a register of overseers of highways, records of the creation and alteration of road districts, highway tax lists, and minutes of highway planning meetings. Legal records for minor civil and criminal cases from 1858 to 1926 (with some gaps) can be found in the three volumes of  justice of the peace dockets. The two volumes of treasurer's account books span the periods 1883-1902 and 1922-1978. The general record books (1849-1967) contain a number of different types of records, that vary somewhat from volume to volume, including: school superintendent reports, town orders, road petitions, road tax lists, treasurer's accounts and bonds, chattel mortgages, town officer registers, town board proceedings, constable's bonds, liquor seller's bonds, election tallies, and town meeting minutes. Of special interest is the town meeting minutes from June 15, 1861 that contain townspeople's reactions to the outbreak of the Civil War (this can be found in volume 1, page 199).
