The records include files related to major events and projects conducted by the League, as well as subject files detailing issues in which members took an active interest. Organization records include news clippings, flyers, newsletters, and correspondence between members as well as letters addressed to local and national political and corporate figures.

However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

SCOPE AND CONTENT: The collection is divided into the following record series: League events; organizational records which include flyers and leaflets, news clippings, newsletters, financial and membership files, reports and memos, meeting minutes, and correspondence; project files for important League endeavors; scrapbooks; subject files which document specific issues addressed by members; and photographs (PH Milwaukee Mss 23) which capture various League events and activities.

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: The Women's International League was organized in 1915 as part of the opposition to World War I. Early members included American social activist Jane Addams, who also helped organize the United States WILPF. The Milwaukee Branch was founded in 1921 by Annette Roberts. Other founding members included Eleanor Backus, Winifred Woodmansee, Zona Gale, and Belle La Follette. The WILPF carries out  its opposition to militarism and war through resistance to the draft, protests against nuclear armaments, and campaigns against arms sales. They have been particularly active in support of the United Nations, and since 1948, have had permanent consultative status at this international body. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Milwaukee Branch became active in numerous other issues that impacted United States society, women in particular, including domestic violence, poverty, peace education for children, racism, and the banning of handguns.
