ABSTRACT: Records of a commission whose purpose is to develop statements of stratigraphic principles; review problems and recommend procedures applying to classification and nomenclature of stratigraphic and related areas. Most of the collection consists of general files, arranged chronologically, containing correspondence, minutes of meetings, and reports of the NACSN. The general files document annual meetings of the commission; the development and revisions of the stratigraphic code; activities of subcommittees; and the writing of the Commission's published notes and reports.

The collection also contains extensive files of the Code Committee (1977-1983) which coordinated a complete revision of the code. The Code Committee files include scattered records of its subcommittees. The records of the Quaternary Advisory Group contain correspondence, minutes of meetings, and reports concerning terminology and stratigraphic principles and applications of Quaternary stratigraphic concepts.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection are open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39). The NACSN retains all copyright to the collection.

ARRANGEMENT: The files are organized alphabetically by personal name, name of office, or by subject, then chronologically. Files can contain a variety of materials, including correspondence, staff memos, and reports. In addition to the normal chronological files, files containing more specialized information about a topic are found after the chronological files.

ACQUISITION: The collection was largely compiled by Norman Lasca in the early 1980s when various members of the Commission sent him their available records. In November 1983, the Commissioners voted to place the records of the Commission at the Golda Meir Library, and the transfer took place early in 1984. The American Geographical Society transferred the collection to the Archives Department in 1993. Norman Lasca transferred additional materials to the Archives in November 1994 (accession number 1994-015), September 1996, June 1998 (accession number 1997-056), October 1999 (accession number 1999-025), October 2000 (accession number 2000-020), September 2003 (accession number 2003-015), June 2004 (accession number 2003-095), September 2004 (accession number 2004-026), and June 2007 (accession number 2006-067).


PROCESSING: Mark A. Vargas processed the collection at the Archives in June-July 1993. The original order of the collection was very disorganized, and it was necessary to place most materials in the general files. Shannon Urban added the 1994 and 1996 accessions to the collection in September 1996. Mark Vargas added the 1998 accession in June 1998. Nick Weber added the 1999 accession in October 1999. Chan Harries added the 2000 accession in October 2000.  Bob Carter added the 2003 accession in September 2003. Jenny Juno added the 2004-2007 accessions in August 2007.
