Papers, including cash and letter books, of a Milwaukee real estate and loan operator and president of the Plankinton Bank. Most of the collection relates to the operation of the loan business, especially the making of loans on farm lands in the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. There is a vast quantity of correspondence, much of it routine, with mortgagers and with local agents concerning the examination of applications for loans, collection of interest commissions, security, abstracts of title, extensions of mortgages, foreclosures, and taxes. The agents included Melvin Grisby, C. M. Harrison, Edward J. Hodgson, and George W. Wishard. The collection contains letterbooks dealing with the administration of the firm's assignee, William H. Milwaukee Small Collection 204
Annual financial statements and a prospectus (ca. 1930) of a Milwaukee, Wis. neighborhood building and loan association formed in 1927. Economy provided savings and investment opportunities to persons of low or median income and financed first home mortgages for its members. Members were primarily families of German descent who lived near Economy's office on North Teutonia Avenue. The association was dissolved in 1968 and its assets sold to Hopkins Savings and Loan.

Papers of a Milwaukee Polish American architect and engineer, containing architectural drawings of Milwaukee public and private buildings, including St. Adalbert's Church, St. Francis Hospital, Lincoln State Bank, and the Convent Hill Low Rent Housing Project; a family tree and other papers of genealogical interest; and family photographs, including a World War I photo of Company K, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Division.

Papers of a Milwaukee pioneer banker, including Marshall's letters to his brother describing his 1841 move from Philadelphia to Milwaukee and his early involvement in the banking business. Collection also contains materials on Marshall's role in the founding of the State Bank (Madison, Wisconsin) and the Marshall and Ilsley of Milwaukee; the Marshall family genealogy; and some correspondence from the 1940s concerning the preservation of Marshall's papers. Papers of a lawyer and financier originally from New York. While working for a New York State bank, Orton organized financial and land deals with Milwaukee lawyer Allison Lewis and others, including James Kneeland of Wauwatosa. Orton's business relationships are well documented in the collection. Includes extensive correspondence concerning the lawsuit between Orton and Josiah A. Noonan resulting from financial recriminations after the burning of the Humboldt and Menonomee Paper Mills; and letters from Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Edward G. Ryan which provide intimate details concerning the other justices.

Also contains correspondence with Isaac Sherman on the management of a lumber company; legal papers from a number of cases handled by Orton, and two account books. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Includes correspondence (1866-1907); ledgers, registers, and journals (1887-1902) of the bank and its two presidents, John Plankinton and Frederick T. Day, documenting the operations of the bank and its collapse in 1893 after the failure of loans to Frank A. Lappen & Company; and testimony and legal papers of the bank's assignees. The assignees records include assignments, court testimony, and other legal papers relating to litigation in Milwaukee County circuit court concerning the affairs of the bank. Most of the collection pertains to the work of the Congress, including files on the boycott of German products in 1933 and the Olympic Games of 1936, and promotion of other anti-Nazi measures; on cooperation with other Jewish organizations; on World War II Russian relief programs; and on internal conflicts within the Milwaukee group.Other files include records of the Milwaukee Jewish Council (1939-1947); Poale Zion in Milwaukee (1939-1947); Bank Hapoalim (1937-1940); as well as a scrapbook, and miscellaneous papers (1914-1947) relating to Milwaukee Jewish groups interested in labor, youth, veterans, and interracial relations. Also includes correspondence (1903-1916) consisting largely of Smith's letters to politicians, local officials, and residents; studies relating to the history of Milwaukee, especially its bridges, dams, and waterworks; minutes of the Wisconsin Cremation Society (1895-1896); scrapbooks of newsclippings, especially about Milwaukee public affairs; the report of the jury investigating the 1893 bank failures in Milwaukee; some essays, lectures, and reports, on the history of Wisconsin and its railroads, and the Greenback Party. A large part of the collection provides documentation of Whitcomb's career as receiver, general manager and president of the Wisconsin Central Railroad Line (1893-1906).
